Systematic position and pathogen: Septocyta ruborum is a fungal pathogen classified within the division Ascomycota. It is a well-known agent causing stem and cane blight in various Rubus species. This pathogen specifically targets the vascular and cortical tissues of the canes, leading to severe structural damage of the berry plants.

Diseases and host plants: The primary hosts for this fungus are raspberries and blackberries. The disease manifests as irregular, reddish-brown spots on the stems. Over time, these spots expand, coalesce, and can girdle the cane, which disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, ultimately causing the dieback of the affected parts.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus overwinters as pycnidia within the lesions on infected canes. When spring weather provides sufficient moisture, the pycnidia release conidia that are disseminated via rain splashes and wind. These spores infect new growth through wounds, buds, or naturally occurring openings in the epidermis of the canes.

Developmental conditions and harm: High humidity, persistent wet conditions, and mild temperatures are ideal for the development and spread of Septocyta ruborum. The disease is particularly destructive in poorly managed, overcrowded plantings. The economic impact is significant due to the loss of fruit-bearing wood, reduced cane longevity, and total loss of yield in severely infected crops.

Protection and control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Strict sanitation, including the immediate removal and destruction of infected canes after harvest.
  • Thinning of shoots to maintain low humidity and good airflow within the canopy.
  • Proper fertilization to avoid excessive, succulent growth that is more susceptible to infection.
  • Application of protective fungicides during the early spring and pre-bloom stages to suppress spore germination.
