Septogloeum leaf spot

Septogloeum potentillae is a fungal phytopathogen classified within the class Deuteromycetes. It is primarily known as the causal agent of leaf spot diseases on plants belonging to the Rosaceae family, most notably strawberries (Fragaria) and cinquefoils (Potentilla). This pathogen is widespread in various climatic zones and can significantly affect plant health.

The infection manifests as distinct spots on the foliage. Initially, these are small, often angular or circular, and range from brown to dark reddish-brown in color. As the infection matures, the centers of the spots may dry out and crack. Severe infestations lead to premature defoliation, which inhibits the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.

The biological life cycle of the pathogen involves overwintering as mycelium or conidia within infected plant debris or fallen leaves. During the spring, when temperatures rise and environmental moisture increases, the fungus produces conidia. These spores are then dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and physical contact, initiating new infection cycles on healthy plant tissues.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide optimal conditions for the germination and spread of spores. Poor air circulation caused by overcrowded planting patterns or excessive weed growth significantly increases the risk of rapid pathogen colonization across the field.

Economic losses associated with Septogloeum potentillae are linked to the reduced vigor of the host plants, which diminishes yield potential and weakens the plant's ability to survive the winter. Effective management requires a multifaceted approach to prevent the establishment and spread of the fungus:

• Sanitation by removing and destroying crop residues in the autumn;
• Maintaining proper spacing to ensure adequate air movement;
• Using resistant cultivars where available;
• Applying fungicides during periods of high disease pressure to protect the foliage.
