Celery leaf spot is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria apiicola. Classified under the kingdom Fungi and phylum Ascomycota, this pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily affecting celery plants. It is recognized as one of the most destructive diseases in celery production worldwide, causing both qualitative and quantitative crop losses.
The visual symptoms typically appear as small, chlorotic spots on the leaves, which gradually turn brown with a dark, distinct margin. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia, appearing as tiny black specks within the center of the necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the leaves wither and collapse, leading to significant foliage loss and potentially stunting the overall growth of the plant.
The life cycle of Septoria apiicola is largely driven by seed transmission and survival in crop debris. The fungus produces pycnidia on dead plant tissues, where conidia are formed. These spores are disseminated by splashing water, rain, and human activities within the field. The economic impact of this disease is severe, as it reduces the marketability of celery stalks and foliage. In root celery, it can lead to smaller bulb development. Furthermore, if the infection is present at the time of harvest, it often continues to develop during storage, leading to decay. Left unchecked, the disease can spread rapidly throughout a field, especially in damp, humid climates or under overhead irrigation.
To effectively manage and control the spread of celery leaf spot, producers should adopt an integrated approach:
- Utilize high-quality, certified, disease-free seed lots.
- Implement hot water seed treatment or fungicide seed dressing.
- Execute strict crop rotation, avoiding planting celery in the same soil for at least three years.
