Description
Strawberry leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria fragariae. Classified within the Ascomycota division, this fungus is a specific pathogen that targets various strawberry cultivars. It remains one of the most common foliage diseases affecting commercial and home strawberry production globally, often leading to reduced plant vigor.
The primary symptoms appear on the leaves as small, circular spots that are initially purple or reddish-brown. As the infection progresses, the centers of these spots become necrotic and turn light gray or white, often surrounded by a distinct dark margin. In severe cases, the spots coalesce, causing large areas of the leaf tissue to die, which severely restricts the plant's photosynthetic capability.
The disease cycle of Septoria fragariae is characterized by overwintering in infected plant debris. The fungus survives the winter as mycelium and pycnidia located on dead leaves. In the spring, when temperatures and humidity are favorable, the pycnidia release conidia. These spores are spread through water splashes from rain or irrigation, landing on new, susceptible leaves and initiating secondary infections.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of this disease. The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity levels. Poor airflow within the canopy, combined with prolonged leaf wetness, creates an ideal microclimate for the spores to germinate and infect healthy plant tissue. Frequent rainfall is often the primary driver of rapid disease progression.
Effective control requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as removing and destroying old leaves, maintaining proper plant spacing to improve ventilation, and avoiding overhead irrigation are essential. When disease pressure is high, the application of registered fungicides during the pre-flowering and post-harvest stages is necessary to protect the yield and ensure the longevity of the strawberry patch.
