Septoria glycines
Description
The fungus Septoria glycines is the primary causal agent of brown spot in soybean crops. It belongs to the kingdom Fungi and is classified as a significant pathogen that affects the foliage, stems, and pods of the soybean plant, often leading to yield reduction if left unmanaged.
Symptoms typically start on the lower leaves of the plant as small, irregular, dark brown or reddish-brown spots. As the infection progresses, these lesions may merge, forming larger necrotic areas. Under high humidity, the affected leaves become chlorotic and often drop prematurely, which diminishes the photosynthetic capacity of the canopy.
The life cycle of the fungus is characterized by its ability to overwinter on infected soybean debris left in the field. During the growing season, moisture triggers the release of pycnidiospores from the fungal structures. These spores are spread primarily by splashing raindrops and wind, facilitating the infection of new leaf tissues throughout the season.
Development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on climatic conditions. Warm temperatures and frequent, prolonged periods of leaf wetness are essential for the rapid germination and colonization of the host tissue. Consequently, the disease is most prevalent in environments with high rainfall or heavy dew accumulation during the reproductive stages of soybean development.
Management of the disease requires an integrated approach to minimize crop loss. Strategies include:
- planting resistant or tolerant soybean varieties;
- utilizing crop rotation to break the disease cycle;
- deep tillage to bury infested residues;
- applying foliar fungicides during the critical stages of pod development if disease pressure is high.
