Serratia marcescens is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacterium belonging to the Yersiniaceae family. While widely studied in clinical microbiology, it acts as a significant phytopathogen in agricultural systems. It is characterized by its rod-shaped morphology and the production of a distinctive red pigment under certain environmental conditions.

This pathogen is responsible for various plant diseases, including bacterial spot, systemic wilt, and soft rot of fruits and vegetables. Economically important crops such as tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various cucurbits are particularly susceptible to infection. The pathogen exploits natural openings and wounds on the plant surface to infiltrate the vascular tissues.

The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by moisture availability and nutrient-rich plant environments. Once established within the host tissue, the bacteria secrete extracellular enzymes that degrade plant cell walls, leading to tissue maceration. Dissemination occurs through soil particles, contaminated irrigation water, and the movement of insect vectors that transmit the bacteria while feeding.

Environmental conditions favoring the development of Serratia marcescens include high relative humidity and warm temperatures (typically ranging between 20°C and 30°C). Poor ventilation in greenhouse environments and excessive nitrogen fertilization can exacerbate the disease progression, providing a more favorable environment for the bacterial colonization of plant tissues.

Control of Serratia marcescens requires a comprehensive integrated pest management approach. Preventive measures include the use of disease-free seed stock, implementing strict crop rotation, and maintaining high hygiene standards in greenhouses. Chemical control using copper-based bactericides is often used as a prophylactic measure, while biological control agents are increasingly employed to suppress bacterial populations in the rhizosphere.
