The Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is a pathogenic single-stranded RNA agent belonging to the genus Pospiviroid. Unlike viruses, it lacks a protein capsid and is considered one of the smallest known infectious agents, acting as a sub-viral pathogen that hijacks the host's metabolic machinery to replicate within the nucleus.
This pathogen primarily infects potatoes, causing the characteristic "spindle" or elongated tuber shape that gives the disease its name. It also has a broad host range among solanaceous crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and various ornamental species. Symptoms include stunted growth, rugose foliage, and a reduced number of tubers, which significantly compromises crop quality.
The life cycle of PSTVd is centered on systemic infection through the plant’s phloem tissue. Once it enters a cell, the viroid moves throughout the plant, reaching tubers, seeds, and pollen. Its simple molecular structure allows it to remain infectious for long periods on surfaces, making it a highly persistent threat to agricultural production systems.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of PSTVd include warm temperatures, which facilitate rapid viroid multiplication within the host. Transmission is primarily mechanical, occurring through contact with contaminated tools, machinery, or even human handling during standard cultivation practices. Insects, such as aphids and leafhoppers, can also transmit the viroid between host plants.
The economic impact of PSTVd is severe, as it causes significant yield losses and the rapid degeneration of potato varieties. Control measures are primarily preventive: using certified virus-free seed stock, implementing strict sanitation protocols for equipment, regular diagnostic testing (PCR/ELISA), and the immediate roguing of any plants suspected of being infected to prevent further field spread.
