Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Sida mottle virus (SiMoV) is a member of the genus Begomovirus within the family Geminiviridae. This pathogen possesses a circular single-stranded DNA genome. It is recognized as a significant viral agent that causes systemic diseases in various dicotyledonous plants, primarily those within the Malvaceae family, by disrupting cellular metabolism and development.

Host plants and symptoms: The virus primarily infects wild plants like Sida species, but it also impacts economically significant crops such as cotton and okra. Typical clinical symptoms of the infection include chlorotic mosaic, leaf mottling, deformation of the leaf lamina, vein clearing, and severe stunting of the plant. These symptoms directly inhibit the photosynthetic capacity and overall health of the affected crop.

Biology and life cycle: The primary vector for the transmission of SiMoV is the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is transmitted in a persistent circulative manner. Once the whitefly feeds on an infected plant, the virus particles cross the midgut, migrate into the hemolymph, and reach the salivary glands. Once acquired, the whitefly can remain infectious for several weeks, efficiently spreading the virus across agricultural fields.

Conditions of spread and economic impact: The spread of the virus is inextricably linked to the population dynamics of its vector. Hot and arid climate conditions create an ideal environment for rapid whitefly reproduction, which leads to sudden viral outbreaks. The economic impact is severe, manifesting as significant yield losses, poor fruit or fiber quality, and in extreme cases, the total failure of the crop if infection occurs during early growth stages.

Protection and control measures: Controlling Sida mottle virus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on breaking the disease cycle:

  • Elimination of alternative host plants, particularly weeds of the Malvaceae family, around farm borders.
  • Application of systemic insecticides to manage whitefly populations during critical growth stages.
  • Utilization of physical barriers or floating row covers in high-value greenhouse cultivation.
  • Promotion of resistant or tolerant crop cultivars to minimize the impact of the viral infection.
