Silicon deficiency is an abiotic stress factor that compromises the structural and immunological integrity of crops. Although not traditionally classified as a macronutrient, silicon is an essential beneficial element that strengthens plant tissues by forming silicon-cellulose complexes in the cell walls, making them resistant to physical and biological damage.
Plants affected by silicon deficiency exhibit increased susceptibility to major fungal and bacterial pathogens, such as blast disease in rice, powdery mildew in wheat, and various stalk rots in corn. The lack of silica-based reinforcement in the epidermis allows fungal hyphae and pathogens to penetrate the host tissues with significantly less resistance.
The biology of silicon in plants involves the active and passive uptake of monosilicic acid from the soil. Once transported to the shoots, it polymerizes into solid silica structures known as phytoliths. These microscopic structures act as a physical armor, deterring herbivores and inhibiting the enzymatic secretions that pathogens use to dissolve plant cell walls.
Silicon deficiency typically occurs in highly weathered soils, sandy soils, or intensive agricultural systems where continuous cropping removes silicon without replenishment. Furthermore, excessive nitrogen fertilization can exacerbate the problem by accelerating growth rates beyond the plant's capacity to absorb and accumulate sufficient silicon for structural support.
Effective control measures require monitoring soil health and addressing deficiencies through the application of silica-rich fertilizers, such as calcium silicates or soluble silicates. Proper nutrient management, which balances nitrogen and silicon ratios, is essential for maintaining crop resilience and ensuring stable yields against both biotic and abiotic threats.
