Description
Slippers (lat. Slippers) represent a group of slime molds (myxomycetes) that can behave as phytopathogens in specific environmental conditions. While typically saprotrophic, these organisms are capable of forming plasmodia that interact negatively with plant tissues, particularly affecting seedlings and high-moisture crops by inhibiting nutrient uptake and causing mechanical damage to root systems.
Taxonomically, these organisms belong to the kingdom Protista. They are distinct from true fungi due to the lack of a rigid cell wall during their mobile plasmodial stage. This unique biological trait allows them to navigate through soil pores and across surfaces to seek out nutrition, occasionally damaging crop tissues in the process of consuming surrounding organic matter.
The life cycle of this pathogen includes a complex transition between spore stages, flagellated zoospores, and the vegetative plasmodial phase. When environmental conditions become unfavorable, such as during periods of drought, the organism forms highly resilient structures known as sclerotia. These structures remain dormant in the soil for years, waiting for optimal moisture levels to reactivate and complete their development cycle.
Outbreaks are heavily correlated with high humidity levels, soil compaction, and poor air circulation. In greenhouse conditions, where moisture levels are often kept high, Slippers can rapidly colonize the rhizosphere. The resulting damage often serves as a precursor to more severe infections, as the weakened tissue becomes highly susceptible to colonization by other opportunistic bacteria and fungi present in the environment.
Integrated management is essential for controlling these organisms, focusing primarily on habitat modification:
- improving soil drainage and preventing waterlogging;
- maintaining proper plant spacing to facilitate air circulation;
- removing organic debris that provides a substrate for the plasmodia;
- using soil disinfection practices in nurseries;
- applying copper-based fungicides when significant infestation is observed.
