Sorghum yellow is a viral pathogen known to affect various Sorghum species, acting as a systemic infection that colonizes the plant's vascular tissue. Classified as an obligate plant virus, it forces the host plant to redirect its energy toward viral replication rather than growth and grain production. This process fundamentally disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to severe physiological stress.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are Sorghum bicolor and its relatives, including sudangrass. Symptoms typically appear as chlorosis, starting with a yellowing of the leaf margins and advancing inward. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and overall poor vigor. In advanced stages, the plant's development is significantly hindered, and it may fail to produce viable seed heads.
