The Southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the genus Sobemovirus. As a viral agent, it poses a significant threat to various legume species, causing systemic infections that can lead to major yield losses in agricultural settings worldwide. Its stability and ease of transmission make it a constant concern for growers.
The virus primarily affects common beans, soybeans, and other legumes. Infected plants typically display symptoms such as leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf distortion, and stunted growth. The severity of these symptoms often depends on the host cultivar and environmental conditions, but the overall physiological impact on the plant is invariably detrimental to crop development.
Regarding its biology and lifecycle, SBMV is highly contagious.
