Sowthistle yellow vein virus (SYVV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Nucleorhabdovirus, within the family Rhabdoviridae. The virus primarily affects plants within the Asteraceae family. While the sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) is the most notable host and reservoir, the virus can also impact various economic crops, posing a threat to horticultural production.

The disease is characterized by distinct yellowing patterns along the leaf veins, which gradually progress to general chlorosis. Infected plants show symptoms such as stunted growth, distortion of leaves, and significant yield loss. The physiological damage caused by the virus affects the overall vitality and quality of the crop, making it a major concern for growers.

The biology of SYVV is strictly tied to its vector, the sowthistle aphid (Hyperomyzus lactucae). The virus exhibits persistent circulation, meaning the aphid remains infective for the remainder of its life after acquiring the virus from an infected plant. This mode of transmission ensures that the virus persists in the environment throughout the growing season.

Conditions favorable for the spread of the virus involve the presence of widespread weed hosts and high populations of aphid vectors. When winged aphids migrate from infected wild hosts to cultivated crops, the virus spreads rapidly across fields. Warm and stable temperatures enhance the metabolic rate of the vectors, accelerating the transmission cycle.

Effective management and control strategies for SYVV are focused on vector suppression and habitat management:

  • Applying systemic insecticides to reduce aphid populations before mass migration occurs.
  • Implementing weed management programs to eliminate the sowthistle and other wild hosts in the vicinity of crop fields.
  • Using reflective mulches or crop covers to deter aphid colonization.
  • Establishing spatial or temporal isolation from known infected areas to minimize the risk of secondary spread.
