Description

Soybean downy mildew is a prevalent fungal-like disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora manshurica. Classified within the Oomycota phylum, this obligate parasite specifically targets the soybean plant (Glycine max). It is considered a significant threat in major soybean-producing regions worldwide, affecting both yield quantity and quality.

The symptoms of the disease are most commonly observed on the leaves. Initially, small, pale-green to yellowish spots appear on the upper leaf surface. Under favorable high-humidity conditions, these lesions develop a grayish-purple mat of fungal conidiophores and conidia on the undersides of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots eventually turn necrotic and become brown.

The life cycle of Peronospora manshurica is highly dependent on environmental moisture. The pathogen survives the winter in the form of thick-walled oospores found on crop debris and on the surface of soybean seeds. In the spring, these oospores germinate to infect emerging seedlings. Throughout the growing season, conidia are produced and spread via wind and rain splashes.

The development of downy mildew is favored by temperatures between 18°C and 22°C and high relative humidity. Rainy and cloudy weather patterns are particularly conducive to disease spread. If infection occurs early or during the pod-filling stage, it can significantly reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to premature leaf drop and smaller seed size.

Integrated disease management (IDM) is essential for controlling downy mildew. Farmers should implement:

  • Crop rotation to reduce primary inoculum levels in the soil.
  • The use of high-quality, fungicide-treated seeds to minimize seed-borne transmission.
  • Application of foliar fungicides during the vegetative and reproductive stages in high-risk areas.
  • Selection of resistant or tolerant soybean varieties tailored to local environmental conditions.
