Description

Soybean blistering is a diagnostic symptom typically induced by the Soybean mosaic virus (SMV). This viral infection significantly alters the plant's morphology, causing the leaves to become puckered, distorted, and covered in uneven, blister-like raised areas, which directly interferes with the plant's photosynthetic efficiency.

Taxonomically, the pathogen belongs to the family Potyviridae, genus Potyvirus. It is a single-stranded RNA virus that systemically infects the plant. By disrupting cellular hormonal balances, the virus causes irregular growth patterns in leaf tissues, manifesting as the characteristic blistering and mosaic patterns (green and yellow mottling).

The biology of the disease relies on two primary transmission modes: vertical transmission via infected seeds and horizontal transmission via insect vectors, primarily aphids (such as Aphis glycines). The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner, meaning the aphid picks up the virus during brief feeding probes and can immediately infect healthy plants.

The spread and severity of soybean blistering are heavily dependent on environmental conditions that favor aphid population dynamics. Warm, dry weather conditions that encourage the proliferation of vectors lead to higher disease incidence. Additionally, infected volunteer soybean plants or wild legume weeds act as year-round reservoirs for the virus.

Effective management requires an integrated pest and disease control approach to mitigate economic losses. Essential strategies include:

  • Sowing high-quality, virus-indexed certified seeds.
  • Implementing regular field monitoring to control aphid populations with systemic insecticides.
  • Selecting and planting virus-resistant or tolerant soybean varieties.
  • Sanitation practices such as removing weed hosts from field margins.
