Description
Taxonomy and nature of the pathogen: Soybean dwarf virus (SbDV) is an obligate plant pathogen belonging to the genus Polerovirus within the family Solemoviridae. As a phloem-limited virus, it resides primarily in the vascular tissues of the plant, disrupting nutrient transport and causing significant physiological stress to the host organism.
Disease and host range: The virus causes the soybean dwarf disease, characterized by stunted internodes, upward leaf curling, and severe chlorosis. While soybeans are the primary agricultural target, the virus has a wide host range among legume species, including perennial clovers and alfalfa, which act as reservoirs and provide a bridge for the virus to move into commercial fields.
Biology and transmission cycle: The virus is not mechanically transmissible or seed-borne. It is strictly transmitted by aphid vectors, most notably Aulacorthum solani, in a persistent, circulative manner. Once an aphid feeds on an infected plant, the virus moves through its digestive tract into the hemolymph, allowing the vector to remain infective for the remainder of its life.
Development and impact: Disease incidence is heavily influenced by the seasonal activity of aphid populations, which peak during cool and temperate weather conditions. The damage caused by the virus is severe, as infected plants remain dwarfed with poorly developed root systems. This leads to substantial reductions in bean yield, malformed pods, and lower seed quality, often resulting in significant economic losses for growers.
Protection and control measures: Management of Soybean dwarf virus focuses primarily on vector control and field hygiene. Key strategies include the removal of weed hosts and volunteer legumes in and around fields to eliminate inoculum sources. Furthermore, timely application of systemic insecticides is necessary to suppress aphid populations during the critical early stages of soybean growth to prevent initial virus establishment.
