Description

Soybean mild mosaic virus (SbMMV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Comovirus within the Secoviridae family. As a viral pathogen, it specifically targets leguminous crops, with soybean (Glycine max) being its primary host. The virus is characterized by its small, isometric particles containing bipartite positive-sense single-stranded RNA.

The primary symptom of infection is mild mottling or chlorosis of the leaves. Infected plants often show no drastic stunting or necrosis, which is why the disease is termed "mild." However, despite the lack of severe visual damage, the virus significantly alters the physiological processes within the plant, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency.

Transmission occurs primarily through biological vectors, specifically beetles (Coleoptera), such as bean leaf beetles. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant tissue and transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, the virus is known to be seed-borne, meaning that infected seeds can serve as a primary source of inoculum for the new growing season.

Environmental conditions that favor the activity of insect vectors are critical for the spread of SbMMV. Warm and humid climates increase beetle populations, thereby increasing the rate of secondary spread within a field. The virus can persist in infected seeds and potentially in some weed hosts, allowing it to survive between growing seasons in the absence of a primary host.

Economic damage is caused by yield reduction through decreased pod set and lower seed weight. Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this virus. This includes rigorous seed testing to ensure pathogen-free material, chemical control of insect vectors, and the maintenance of clean fields to prevent the buildup of reservoirs of infection near soybean crops.
