Soybean severe mosaic virus (SSMV) is a viral plant pathogen classified within the genus Potyvirus of the Potyviridae family. It is a highly significant disease impacting soybean production globally, known for causing severe yield losses and negatively affecting the overall health and vigor of soybean crops.
The virus primarily affects soybean plants (Glycine max). Symptoms are characterized by distinct mosaic patterns on foliage, severe leaf deformation, curling, and systemic dwarfing of the plant. In extreme cases, the development of pods is severely hindered, leading to a significant reduction in both seed quality and total grain yield.
The biology of the pathogen relies heavily on insect vectors, primarily aphids, for rapid horizontal transmission. SSMV is characterized as a non-persistent virus, meaning it can be transmitted by aphids after very brief feeding probes on infected plants.
