Description
Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus. It represents a significant global threat to soybean production, as it is easily transmitted and causes systemic infections that severely affect the development and yield quality of legumes.
The disease symptoms typically include leaf mottling, mosaic patterns of light and dark green, leaf crinkling, and stunting of the entire plant. In severe infections, plants exhibit significant yield loss, reduced pod set, and reduced seed quality, including mottled seed coats which significantly lowers market value.
The biology of SMV is characterized by its dual transmission mechanism: seed-borne transmission, which ensures the spread of the virus over long distances, and aphid-borne transmission, which facilitates rapid secondary spread within a field. Aphids act as non-persistent vectors, acquiring and transmitting the virus within seconds of probing host tissues.
Development and spread are favored by environmental conditions that support aphid migration and the proximity of alternative host plants. Late-planted fields or fields near infected perennial legume sources are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks. Once established in the plant tissues, the virus disrupts photosynthetic activity and hormonal balance.
Management strategies focus on a multi-tiered approach to reduce the inoculum pressure. These include planting virus-free certified seeds, adopting resistant or tolerant soybean varieties, and implementing rigorous weed management to remove potential virus reservoirs. Monitoring aphid populations and using strategic chemical control or planting timing can also mitigate the impact of the disease.
