Spencermartinsia viticola is a microscopic ascomycete fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and the genus Spencermartinsia. This phytopathogen is a recognized agent involved in the complex of grapevine trunk diseases, which negatively affect the vascular system and structural integrity of grapevines.
The primary host for this fungus is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The pathogen infects the woody parts of the plant, leading to the development of deep-seated necrosis, dieback of cordons and arms, and a progressive decline in the overall vigor and productivity of the vine, often resulting in premature plant death.
The biology of Spencermartinsia viticola is primarily characterized by the colonization of pruning wounds. Spores are disseminated via wind and rainfall, landing on fresh cuts and infiltrating the internal wood tissue. Once established, the mycelium gradually breaks down the plant's structural tissues, disrupting the transport of water and nutrients.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Periods of wet weather during or immediately following pruning activities significantly increase the risk of infection.
