Description
Sphacelotheca reiliana (syn. Sporisorium reilianum) is a destructive fungal pathogen belonging to the order Ustilaginales. It is a soil-borne disease that specifically affects maize and sorghum crops, causing significant yield losses globally by replacing the reproductive structures of the plant with spore masses.
The disease, commonly known as head smut, is characterized by the transformation of the cob and tassel into large, black, powdery sori. These sori consist of millions of teliospores held together by host vascular bundles. Unlike common smut, which causes galls on various plant parts, head smut specifically targets the reproductive development of the corn plant.
The life cycle of the pathogen begins in the soil where teliospores remain dormant. When corn seeds germinate, the fungus infects the seedling at the meristematic tissue level. The mycelium grows systemically within the plant throughout the growing season, remaining largely invisible until the plant initiates its reproductive phase.
Favorable conditions for infection include dry soil and relatively high temperatures (between 20°C and 30°C). These conditions promote rapid pathogen activity while stressing the emerging corn seedlings, making them more susceptible to invasion. The long-term persistence of spores in the soil makes crop rotation an essential component of disease management.
Control of head smut relies heavily on integrated management strategies. Key practices include the selection of resistant corn hybrids, which is the most effective approach. Additionally, seed treatment with specialized systemic fungicides is crucial to protect seedlings during the initial stage of development. Minimizing soil compaction and maintaining proper field sanitation help reduce spore buildup in the environment.
