The primary manifestation of the disease involves the development of a white or grayish fungal mycelium on the leaf blades, stems, and sometimes the ears of cereal plants. As the infection progresses, the mycelium forms dense, dark structures known as cleistothecia. This colonization of plant tissue severely disrupts the photosynthetic process, leading to stunted plant growth and significantly reduced grain fill.

The life cycle of the pathogen is characterized by both asexual and sexual stages. During the active growing season, the fungus produces conidia, which act as secondary inoculum, spreading rapidly via wind currents. The sexual stage occurs in late stages of the host's development, resulting in the formation of overwintering structures that remain on crop debris, ensuring the survival of the fungus until the following season.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of the pathogen. Optimal development occurs under moderate temperatures, typically between 15°C and 20°C, combined with high humidity. Agricultural practices such as dense planting, excessive nitrogen fertilization, and failure to rotate crops create an environment that facilitates rapid epidemic development in cereal fields.

The economic impact of this pathogen is reflected in decreased grain quality and substantial yield losses. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for control. These include selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars, ensuring optimal crop spacing, practicing field sanitation to remove infected residues, and applying systemic fungicides during critical growth stages such as tillering or stem elongation to suppress the development of the fungal colonies.
