Taxonomic classification and pathogen type. Sphaerotheca fuliginea is an obligate parasitic fungus belonging to the phylum Ascomycota and the order Erysiphales. It is widely recognized as a primary causative agent of powdery mildew disease, affecting a vast variety of horticultural and agricultural crops worldwide, with a particular affinity for members of the Cucurbitaceae family.

Host plants and symptoms. This pathogen frequently attacks cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, and squash, as well as various ornamental species. The infection manifests initially as small white powdery spots on leaves and petioles, which eventually enlarge and cover the entire leaf surface. Severely infected foliage turns yellow, becomes brittle, and eventually dies, which drastically reduces the plant's ability to produce sugars through photosynthesis.

Biology and lifecycle. The fungus spreads primarily through airborne conidia, facilitating rapid transmission across fields or greenhouses. The pathogen also produces cleistothecia, which are fruiting bodies that allow the fungus to overwinter on infected plant debris. These structures release ascospores when environmental conditions become suitable, triggering the initial primary infection at the start of the new growing season.

Conditions for growth. Sphaerotheca fuliginea thrives in warm and humid environments, though it is highly adaptable to a wide range of temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. High humidity levels combined with poor air circulation often accelerate the colonization process. Furthermore, plants under stress or those receiving excessive nitrogen fertilization often exhibit increased susceptibility to the pathogen.

Damage and control measures. Economic impact is significant, as infections can lead to substantial yield losses in both quality and quantity due to premature senescence of the foliage. Effective management strategies include:

  • Utilizing disease-resistant crop varieties and hybrids.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues post-harvest.
  • Application of specialized fungicides such as sulfur-based compounds or triazoles.
  • Implementing proper greenhouse ventilation to lower humidity and minimize pathogen proliferation.
