Rice narrow brown leaf spot

Taxonomy and pathogen type: Sphaerulina oryzina (asexual stage known as Cercospora oryzae) is an ascomycete fungus belonging to the family Mycosphaerellaceae. It is a specialized phytopathogen responsible for causing the narrow brown leaf spot disease, a major fungal infection that significantly affects rice production globally.

Diseases and host crops: The fungus primarily attacks rice (Oryza sativa). It infects all aerial parts of the plant, including leaf blades, leaf sheaths, stem nodes, and glumes. The symptoms appear as narrow, linear, reddish-brown lesions that run parallel to the leaf veins, restricting nutrient and water transport within the plant tissues.

Biology and disease cycle: The pathogen survives as mycelium or pseudothecia on infected crop debris and in contaminated seeds. Primary infection occurs through ascospores released from pseudothecia in the spring, while secondary cycles of the disease are propagated by conidia produced on the lesions. These spores are easily spread by wind and rain splashes throughout the growing season.

Environmental conditions and impact: Disease development is favored by warm, humid conditions with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. The damage is characterized by a reduction in the leaf surface area available for photosynthesis, leading to early leaf senescence, grain filling inhibition, and severe yield losses. Under heavy infestation, the quality and weight of the grain are significantly reduced.

Management and control measures: Effective disease management involves an integrated strategy:

• Deployment of resistant rice varieties as the first line of defense.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal or deep incorporation of crop residues into the soil.
• Use of disease-free, certified, and treated seeds.
• Optimal irrigation and water management to minimize prolonged leaf wetness.
• Application of protective and systemic fungicides during critical growth stages when environmental conditions are conducive to infection.
