It functions as a specialized phytopathogen that exclusively targets plants within the Rubus genus. By colonizing the leaves and stems, the fungus disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant, specifically impacting photosynthetic efficiency and the translocation of nutrients required for growth.

Diseases and susceptible crops. This pathogen is primarily responsible for various forms of leaf spot and stem infections in raspberries and blackberries. The disease symptoms typically appear as distinct necrotic spots on the leaf blades, which may develop pale centers surrounded by dark margins. As the infection progresses, premature defoliation often occurs, significantly compromising the vigor of the canes and the overall health of the berry plantation.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Sphaerulina rubi is highly dependent on environmental moisture. The fungus overwinters in the form of perithecia on fallen debris or infected plant tissues. During spring, as temperatures rise and rainfall increases, the pathogen releases ascospores that initiate primary infections. During the growing season, secondary spread occurs through conidia, which are disseminated by wind and splashing water, allowing the fungus to infect fresh tissue throughout the summer months.

Conditions for development and economic impact. High humidity, moderate temperatures, and dense foliage are ideal conditions for the rapid spread of this fungus. The economic impact is significant; it causes weakened canes, reduced fruit yield, and poor development of reproductive buds for the following year. In severe infestations, the cumulative stress can lead to the total decline of the plants, particularly if combined with poor management practices or harsh winter weather.

Management and control measures. Successful management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions:

  • Removing and destroying infected canes and leaf litter at the end of the season.
  • Maintaining optimal planting distances to ensure adequate air circulation.
  • Applying protective and systemic fungicides during high-risk periods of moisture.
  • Prioritizing the cultivation of resistant or tolerant cultivars where possible to minimize infection rates.
