Spiniger meineckellum is a fungal phytopathogen belonging to the Corticiaceae family. It is recognized as the anamorph stage of specific basidiomycetes responsible for the decomposition of woody substrates. While it plays a functional role in natural decomposition, in managed forestry and landscape horticulture, it is considered a dangerous pathogen capable of causing significant wood decay in various tree species.

The primary symptom of an infection by this pathogen is white rot. The fungus infiltrates the tree via bark wounds, pruning scars, or frost cracks. As the mycelium colonizes the xylem, it breaks down essential components like lignin and cellulose, leading to a loss of structural integrity. Infected trees may appear healthy initially, but internal rot eventually weakens the trunk, often resulting in tree failure during severe weather conditions.

The lifecycle of Spiniger meineckellum revolves around the production of conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum. These spores are efficiently dispersed by wind, splashing rain, and even insects visiting the surface of the bark. Once a spore lands on a suitable substrate—specifically an exposed or weakened part of a tree—it germinates and begins to penetrate the internal layers, establishing a persistent fungal colony.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the proliferation of the pathogen. Optimal development is observed in environments with high humidity and moderate temperatures, typically between 15°C and 25°C. Poorly managed orchards or forests, where ventilation is restricted and wounded trees are left unattended, provide the ideal breeding ground for the pathogen to spread rapidly throughout a stand.

Effective management and control strategies focus on minimizing infection opportunities and enhancing plant health. Key measures include:

• regular inspection for signs of fungal decay;
• sanitary pruning to remove infected branches;
• proper disinfection of cutting tools to prevent cross-contamination;
