Description

Sporonema oxycocci is a fungal pathogen that specifically infects cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon). Classified within the coelomycetes group, it serves as the causal agent of cranberry leaf spot disease. This pathogen significantly affects the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to reduced vigour and potential yield losses in commercial berry farming operations.

The primary symptom of the infection includes the appearance of small, reddish-brown spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, often developing a grey center surrounded by a dark brown margin. In severe cases, the infected leaves wither and drop prematurely, which disrupts the plant's metabolic cycle and negatively impacts the overall health and productivity of the shrub.

The life cycle of the pathogen is centered around the survival of pycnidia on dead or infected plant material during the dormant season. As environmental temperatures rise in the spring, the pycnidia release conidia, which are then disseminated via rain splash and wind to healthy tissues. The infection process begins when these spores penetrate the host's surface, establishing new infection sites under favourable moisture conditions.

Optimal development of Sporonema oxycocci is closely linked to high humidity levels, frequent spring rains, and stagnant air within the cranberry beds. The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures. Poorly managed drainage systems and high-density planting exacerbate the risk of outbreaks, as these conditions facilitate rapid spore spread and infection cycles throughout the growing season.

Effective management and control strategies should prioritize the following:

  • Rigorous removal of infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum level for the following year.
  • Optimizing spacing between plants to enhance airflow and promote rapid drying of foliage.
  • The use of targeted fungicide applications during the early stages of disease development to protect new growth.
  • Maintaining proper site drainage to prevent water accumulation that creates a conducive microclimate for the pathogen.
