Squash mosaic

Description

Squash mosaic virus (SqMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Comovirus within the Secoviridae family. It is a virus with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome that causes systemic diseases in a variety of plant species, particularly within the Cucurbitaceae family.

The virus affects major agricultural crops such as cucumbers, melons, squashes, and pumpkins. Typical symptoms include foliage mosaic patterns, yellowing, leaf distortion, and severe stunting of the plant. Infected fruits often exhibit abnormal shapes, bumpy surfaces, and discolored spots, rendering them unsuitable for market standards.

The biology of the virus is largely defined by its transmission via cucumber beetles (family Chrysomelidae). A critical characteristic of SqMV is its ability to be seed-borne, meaning the virus can survive within infected seeds and be transmitted to the next generation of plants. This makes the use of infected seeds a primary pathway for long-distance spread.

Environmental conditions that favor the activity of beetle populations, such as warm temperatures, promote the rapid spread of the virus within fields. In greenhouse settings, the virus can be transmitted mechanically through pruning tools or handling of the crops. Once introduced, the virus can spread very quickly if insect vectors are not managed effectively.

Control strategies for Squash mosaic focus on prevention and vector management. Using virus-free, certified seeds is the most effective way to prevent primary infection. Growers should also implement rigorous insect control programs to manage beetle populations and adopt strict sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants, to minimize the secondary spread of the virus.
