Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. The fungus Stemphylium herbarum (sexual stage Pleospora herbarum) belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is a cosmopolitan plant pathogen and saprophyte. While often living on dead organic matter, it frequently transitions to a parasitic mode, attacking living plant tissues and causing significant yield losses in diverse agricultural environments.
Diseases and susceptible crops. This fungus causes a disease known as Stemphylium leaf spot. It affects a wide range of hosts, most notably onions, garlic, tomatoes, asparagus, and alfalfa. The disease manifests as irregular, brown to black necrotic spots on leaves and stems, which often develop characteristic target-like concentric rings as the infection progresses.
Biology and lifecycle. S. herbarum overwinters as mycelium or pseudothecia on crop debris, in the soil, or on infested seeds. During periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures, the fungus produces conidia, which are disseminated by wind, splashing rain, or irrigation water. Upon landing on a susceptible host, the conidia germinate and penetrate the plant epidermis directly or via natural openings like stomata.
Conditions for development and economic impact. The pathogen thrives under warm and humid conditions, with optimal development occurring between 20°C and 25°C. High rainfall or overhead irrigation significantly exacerbates the spread of the disease. The economic impact is severe, as the pathogen causes premature defoliation, stunted plant growth, and a reduction in the size and quality of harvestable produce.
Protection and control measures. Management of the disease relies on an integrated pest management strategy:
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues.
- Crop rotation with non-host species to break the disease cycle.
- Use of disease-free certified seeds.
- Application of protective and systemic fungicides (e.g., strobilurins, triazoles).
- Maintenance of adequate plant spacing to promote airflow and foliage drying.
