Stenocarpella macrospora is a significant fungal plant pathogen that belongs to the phylum Ascomycota. It is primarily known for causing diplodia ear rot and stalk rot in maize. This pathogen is globally distributed and poses a serious threat to corn production, particularly in regions with high humidity and favorable thermal conditions during the grain-filling stage.

Symptoms of the infection caused by this fungus appear as characteristic V-shaped necrotic lesions on leaves and the development of white, dense mycelium on infected corn ears. As the infection progresses, the grains become shriveled, discolored, and light in weight. The stalk tissues become soft and brittle, which frequently leads to lodging and harvest difficulties.

The life cycle of the fungus is primarily sustained by infected crop residues left on the soil surface. The pathogen overwinters as pycnidia and dormant mycelium within the stalks and cobs. During the growing season, spores are dispersed by splashing rain and wind currents, infecting new plant tissues when environmental conditions are sufficiently wet.

The severity of an outbreak is heavily dependent on weather patterns. Extended periods of high rainfall combined with moderate temperatures are critical for disease development. Furthermore, agronomic practices such as continuous corn cropping and reduced tillage systems significantly increase the inoculum load in the field, facilitating the spread of Stenocarpella macrospora.
