Stolbur phytoplasma, classified as Candidatus Phytoplasma solani, is a significant plant pathogen that causes a variety of diseases in important crops. It belongs to the class Mollicutes and is characterized as a cell wall-less prokaryotic organism that resides exclusively in the phloem tissue of infected hosts, severely disrupting the plant's vascular system and nutrient translocation.
The pathogen has a very broad host range, primarily affecting Solanaceae crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as several wild weed species. Typical symptoms include leaf chlorosis, severe stunting, phyllody (green, leaf-like flower parts), fruit malformation, and a proliferation of axillary shoots, commonly referred to as a "witches' broom" growth pattern.
The biology of Stolbur phytoplasma is dependent on its insect vector, typically the planthopper Hyalesthes obsoletus. The life cycle involves the insect acquiring the phytoplasma while feeding on infected weed reservoirs (especially field bindweed) and then transmitting the pathogen to healthy crop plants during subsequent feeding events. The phytoplasma persists within both the vector and the host plant, allowing for long-term transmission.
Environmental factors, specifically temperature and humidity, play a critical role in disease epidemiology. Warm, dry weather conditions favor the migration and reproduction of the vector, leading to widespread outbreaks. The economic impact is profound, as infection often results in total loss of marketable fruit quality and significant reductions in tuber or crop yield.
Control and management strategies are focused on breaking the disease triangle by targeting the vector and the reservoir host. Effective practices include the intensive removal of host weeds like bindweed, the use of insecticides to suppress leafhopper populations, and the implementation of spatial isolation from known infection sources. Breeding for host resistance remains a key long-term goal for integrated pest management programs.
