It is a parasitic plant that acts as a serious agricultural pathogen by attaching its haustoria to the root systems of host plants. It extracts water, minerals, and photosynthates, essentially acting as a severe biotic stressor on the host.

Host range and diseases: This parasite targets vital Poaceae crops, particularly maize, sorghum, pearl millet, and upland rice. Infection causes symptoms typical of systemic disease, including severe wilting, stunted height, chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield. The plant essentially "drains" the host, causing massive physiological disruption.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle is highly specialized. Seeds remain dormant in the soil for years and only germinate in response to chemical stimulants (strigolactones) released by host roots. Upon germination, the parasite attaches to the root, develops underground for several weeks, and subsequently emerges to bloom and produce thousands of minute seeds, ensuring its persistence in the environment.
