Systematic position and type of pathogen. Striga forbesi is a parasitic flowering plant belonging to the family Orobanchaceae. It acts as an obligate hemiparasite that attaches itself to the root systems of host plants. By forming specialized structures called haustoria, it penetrates the host roots and extracts vital water, nutrients, and minerals, directly affecting the host's physiological functions.
Diseases and host crops. This species is a significant agricultural pest, primarily impacting cereal crops in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Its main hosts include maize, sorghum, millet, and rice. The parasitic infection leads to severe stunting, chlorosis, and general wilting, as the host plant is unable to sustain its own growth while nourishing the parasite.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Striga forbesi is synchronized with its host through chemical signaling. The parasite's seeds remain dormant in the soil until they detect strigolactones, which are root exudates released by potential hosts. Once germinated, the parasite develops roots that seek out the host, creating a vascular connection to commence its parasitic phase.
Conditions for development and harmfulness. The weed thrives in areas with poor soil fertility and intensive monoculture systems. Its damage is particularly insidious because the parasite inflicts massive physiological stress on the host underground, long before its green shoots appear above the soil surface. This leads to dramatic yield losses, often ranging from 30% to total crop failure.
Control and management measures. Managing Striga forbesi requires an integrated pest management strategy to reduce the soil seed bank and prevent further infestation:
- Breeding and planting host crops with genetic resistance or tolerance to Striga.
- Implementing crop rotation with "trap crops" that induce suicidal germination of Striga seeds.
- Application of nitrogen fertilizers to improve host crop vigor and suppress parasite development.
- Manual weeding or selective herbicide application before the parasite can flower and produce new seeds.
