Systematically, it belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and class Dothideomycetes. While lichens are primarily symbiotic organisms, Strigula elegans is recognized in botanical and agricultural contexts for its ability to occupy the leaf surface, which can interfere with the host plant's physiological functions under specific environmental conditions.
The host range of this lichen includes a variety of tropical and subtropical plants, including camellias, magnolias, and various citrus species. It appears on the leaf surface as flat, branching, or rounded thalli that are often grey or greenish-grey. These structures are closely appressed to the leaf cuticle and can sometimes lead to localized necrosis or chlorosis of the underlying leaf tissue due to the obstruction of sunlight and gas exchange.
The life cycle and biology of Strigula elegans are strictly dependent on high ambient humidity and moderate temperatures. The lichen reproduces via spores produced in perithecia, which are small fruiting bodies embedded within the thallus. These spores are typically dispersed by rain splash or wind currents. Once they land on a suitable leaf surface in a high-humidity environment, they germinate to form a new thallus.
Development is most vigorous in shaded, stagnant air environments where moisture persists on leaf surfaces for extended periods. The inability of the leaf surface to dry quickly creates an ideal niche for the lichen to thrive. Although it is not a primary pathogen like many fungi, its extensive colonization can lead to reduced photosynthetic efficiency, especially in high-density greenhouse conditions or nurseries.
Management and control strategies focus on modifying the microclimate to be less favorable for lichen growth. This includes:
- Regular pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration within the plant canopy.
- Regulating greenhouse humidity to ensure leaves dry quickly after watering.
- Removing and destroying heavily colonized foliage to reduce spore load.
- Application of specialized fungicide treatments, although these are rarely required if environmental hygiene is maintained.
