Sugarcane dwarf

Sugarcane dwarf is a serious plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria lacking a cell wall. These pathogens are obligate parasites that colonize the phloem of the sugarcane plant. Classified under the 16SrI phytoplasma group, this pathogen disrupts the host's physiological processes, leading to severe stunting and systemic tissue damage.

The primary clinical signs of the disease are the dramatic shortening of internodes, resulting in a distinct dwarf stature of the plant. Infected stalks typically show yellowing of the leaves and an abnormal proliferation of side shoots, creating a bunchy top or witch's broom appearance. This structural disruption severely limits the biomass accumulation and sugar storage capacity of the plant.

The biological cycle of the pathogen relies on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers. The phytoplasma is acquired when the insect feeds on the phloem sap of an infected plant. After a latent period of multiplication within the insect's body, the vector becomes capable of transmitting the disease to healthy sugarcane plants, effectively spreading the infection across the plantation.

Epidemiological spread is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, which directly regulate the populations of insect vectors. Warm climates provide optimal conditions for both the multiplication of the phytoplasma within the insect and the rapid movement of vectors between host plants, often causing localized outbreaks that can spread rapidly.

Control measures must focus on eliminating the pathogen reservoir and managing vector populations. This includes strict phytosanitary practices, such as the use of disease-free planting material derived from tissue culture, the rogueing of symptomatic plants to reduce primary inoculum, and the application of insecticides to control the population density of leafhoppers in the field.
