Description
Systematic position and pathogen nature: Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) belongs to the Potyviridae family, genus Potyvirus. It is a plant-pathogenic virus with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. The viral particles are flexuous, filamentous structures, which is a hallmark morphological characteristic of this genus.
Host plants and diseases: The virus causes sugarcane mosaic disease, which affects several economically important Poaceae species. Major hosts include sugarcane, maize (corn), sorghum, and pearl millet. Infection leads to systemic symptoms such as irregular mottling or mosaic patterns of light and dark green on leaves, which can sometimes appear as distinct streaks or stripes.
Biology and life cycle: SCMV is primarily transmitted in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner by various aphid species, such as Rhopalosiphum maidis. The virus is acquired from an infected plant through the aphid's stylet during brief probes and is quickly inoculated into a healthy plant. It does not multiply within the vector, making transmission dependent on immediate insect movement.
Environmental conditions and impact: Disease outbreaks are highly correlated with aphid population surges and favorable warm weather conditions. The damage caused by the virus is significant, as it interferes with photosynthesis and metabolic processes. Infected crops show stunted growth, reduced biomass, and in the case of grain crops, a substantial reduction in yield quality and quantity.
Management and control strategies: Controlling the spread of SCMV requires a multi-faceted approach centered on prevention and vector management:
