Description
Systematic position and pathogen type: The pathogen causing sunflower downy mildew is Plasmopara halstedii (Farl.) Berl. & De Toni. It is an obligate parasite belonging to the kingdom Chromista, phylum Oomycota. Unlike true fungi, oomycetes possess cellulose-based cell walls and a diploid mycelium, which dictates specific requirements for chemical control methods.
Diseases and host plants: The fungus causes sunflower downy mildew (peronosporosis). The disease is specific to sunflowers. Key symptoms include stunting of plants, thickened stems, chlorotic lesions along leaf veins, and the presence of a white, downy fungal growth on the underside of leaves during periods of high humidity.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen survives in the soil as thick-walled oospores, which can remain dormant for up to a decade. Infection is primarily soil-borne; during wet conditions, oospores release zoospores that infect the roots of seedlings. The mycelium then develops systemically, colonizing the vascular tissue throughout the entire plant structure.
Developmental conditions and impact: Development is favored by cool, wet weather and poorly drained soils. Temperatures around +12°C to +18°C are optimal for zoospore release and penetration. The economic impact is severe, often resulting in significant plant mortality, stunted growth, barren heads, and substantial yield losses that can exceed 50-70% in highly infested fields.
Protection and control measures: Effective management relies on a strategic combination of methods:
- Planting resistant sunflower hybrids containing specific resistance genes.
- Applying systematic fungicides for seed treatment, particularly those containing metalaxyl or mefenoxam.
- Adhering to a long-term crop rotation cycle of at least 6 to 8 years.
- Strict eradication of volunteer sunflower plants in the field.
- Ensuring optimal soil temperature and moisture conditions at planting to promote rapid germination.
