Synchytrium aureum is an intracellular parasite belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Chytridiomycota, and the genus Synchytrium. This microscopic phytopathogen is an obligate parasite that affects a wide range of herbaceous plants, causing characteristic galls and tumor-like outgrowths on host tissues.

This pathogen induces specific diseases characterized by hypertrophy and hyperplasia of host tissues. Affected areas often appear as small orange or golden pustules. Among agricultural and wild crops, it can be found on various weed species, which serve as reservoirs for the infection within agroecosystems.

The biology of Synchytrium aureum is closely linked to soil moisture conditions. Its life cycle involves the formation of zoospores, which actively move in the presence of free water to infect young epidermal cells of the host plant. Once inside, the parasite stimulates the cell to divide rapidly, leading to the formation of a gall, within which the fungus completes its development.

High soil humidity and moderate temperatures are critical for the development and spread of the pathogen. Zoospores are easily dispersed by damp soil particles, surface runoff, or agricultural machinery. Under adverse conditions, the fungus forms cysts — thick-walled resting spores capable of remaining viable in the soil for several years.

The damage caused by this pathogen manifests in weakened physiological plant functions, metabolic disruption, and reduced overall productivity. Control measures include crop rotation, the elimination of weed reservoirs, improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, and the use of fungicides when necessary. Proper sanitation and disinfection of agricultural tools are also essential for effective control.
