Tapesia yallundae

Tapesia yallundae

Description

Tapesia yallundae is an ascomycete fungus and a primary causal agent of eyespot, also known as strawbreaker foot rot, which severely affects cereal crops like winter wheat, barley, and rye. As a phytopathogenic fungus, it belongs to the family Dermateaceae and is widely recognized for its economic impact on small-grain agriculture globally.

The disease is characterized by the development of necrotic lesions at the base of the stem, often displaying a distinct eye-shaped pattern. As the fungal infection progresses, it degrades the structural integrity of the stem base, leading to lodging, which complicates harvesting and significantly reduces grain filling, ultimately causing substantial yield losses.

The life cycle of the pathogen is centered on crop debris. The fungus survives as mycelium or stroma in infected stubble left in the soil. During cool, moist conditions in autumn and spring, it produces spores (conidia) that are splashed by raindrops onto the stem bases of emerging seedlings, initiating the infection cycle for the next season.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. Tapesia yallundae thrives in temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C under high humidity conditions. Prolonged wet weather increases the spread of spores, while intensive cropping practices that leave large amounts of infested residue on the surface facilitate the survival and transmission of the pathogen.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pathogen. Key strategies include implementing long rotations between susceptible cereal crops to break the disease cycle, as well as choosing resistant cultivars. Chemical intervention remains a common practice, with fungicide applications timed carefully during the early tillering stage to provide the most effective protection.

  • Crop rotation with non-host plants
  • Use of resistant wheat varieties
  • Fungicide application at tillering
  • Efficient residue management
