Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. Elm leaf blister is caused by the fungus Taphrina ulmi, which belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and the Taphrinomycetes class. This obligate parasite is highly specialized, affecting specific species within the Ulmus genus. It acts by disrupting the normal hormonal balance and cell growth in the host plant's leaves.
Diseases and host plants. The primary symptom is the formation of yellowish to light-brown, slightly raised blister-like spots on the leaf surface. These blisters often cause the leaf to curl or become deformed. The pathogen affects various elm species, reducing their aesthetic value and physiological vigor, which is particularly problematic for landscaping in urban areas.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is tightly linked to the phenology of the elm tree. Spores are released in early spring and infect young, developing leaves. Once established, the fungus colonizes the epidermal layers, causing hypertrophy of the leaf cells. By mid-summer, a distinct layer of asci forms on the underside of the leaves, and the resting spores overwinter on the bark and dormant buds.
Conditions for development and severity. Development is favored by cool and wet spring conditions, which are ideal for spore germination and infection. Prolonged humidity is a key factor in epidemic spread. While the disease rarely kills the host tree, the resulting premature leaf drop significantly reduces photosynthetic capacity and weakens the tree's defense mechanisms against other secondary pathogens.
Protection and control measures. Management strategies should be multifaceted:
- Removing and destroying infected leaf litter to reduce the primary inoculum load.
- Pruning and removing heavily infested branches to improve air circulation within the canopy.
- Applying copper-based fungicides or appropriate protective chemicals early in the spring before bud break.
- Maintaining healthy tree vigor through proper fertilization, watering, and soil management.
- Monitoring nurseries to ensure planting material is free from active fungal infections.
