Thanatophorus cucumeris is a basidiomycetous fungus, frequently identified in its asexual state as Rhizoctonia solani. Belonging to the kingdom Fungi, this organism is a major soil-borne pathogen. It is highly notorious for its broad host range, impacting nearly every type of vegetable, field crop, and ornamental plant in agricultural settings worldwide.

The primary disease associated with this pathogen is rhizoctonia root rot and stem canker. Depending on the crop, symptoms include pre-emergence damping-off, post-emergence seedling death, black scurf on potato tubers, and necrotic lesions on roots and lower stems. Common hosts include potatoes, sugar beets, tomatoes, lettuce, and many pulse crops.

The biology of the fungus involves survival in the soil through thick-walled sclerotia or as mycelium in organic debris. The pathogen can persist in the soil for several years even in the absence of a host crop. Its life cycle relies primarily on vegetative growth, allowing it to colonize the rhizosphere and infect plant tissues through the epidermis or natural openings.

Development is favored by cool and wet soil conditions during the planting season. However, some strains are adapted to warmer environments. Poor drainage, soil compaction, and the presence of abundant crop residues significantly increase the risk of infection. The fungus uses enzymes to degrade host tissues, leading to cell death and the characteristic brown-to-black lesions.

Key methods include the use of disease-free planting material, proper crop rotation to break the life cycle, and soil management practices that improve drainage and aeration.
