Description
The thickened seedling condition is a developmental anomaly often induced by various phytopathogenic fungi that disrupt normal hormonal pathways or cause structural damage to the plant tissue. This condition primarily affects the hypocotyl or root collar area, causing the seedling to appear stunted and swollen, which eventually leads to vascular failure and death.
The primary agents responsible for this disorder include soil-borne fungi such as Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium species, and Fusarium pathogens. These organisms function as opportunistic parasites that thrive in damp, poorly ventilated soil environments, colonizing the plant tissue during the critical germination phase.
The biological development involves the colonization of the epidermis followed by the invasion of vascular tissues. The pathogen secretes metabolites that cause local cellular hypertrophy, which creates the visible thickening. As the mycelium spreads, it blocks the xylem and phloem, preventing nutrient transport and causing the typical blighting effect on young seedlings.
Environmental conditions are critical for disease propagation. Excessive moisture, lack of proper air circulation, and temperature fluctuations significantly exacerbate the development of these pathogens. High-density sowing further increases the risk, as the restricted airflow allows the pathogen to spread rapidly from plant to plant through direct contact or soil moisture.
Control measures must focus on both preventative and remedial actions to maintain healthy plant growth. Effective strategies include:
- chemical seed treatment with appropriate fungicides;
- strict sanitation of greenhouse soils and trays;
- maintaining optimal humidity levels;
- ensuring adequate lighting and air movement for seedlings;
- monitoring for early signs of tissue distortion.
