In agriculture, this fungus is widely recognized as a serious soil-borne pathogen responsible for black root rot in a broad variety of botanical families, affecting global food production.
The pathogen infects a diverse array of crops, including tobacco, cotton, soybeans, beans, and various greenhouse-grown vegetables. Symptoms typically involve the browning and blackening of the roots and the base of the stem. As the disease progresses, the root system decays, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and potential total plant collapse.
The biology of Thielaviopsis is defined by its ability to produce two types of spores: colorless endoconidia for rapid spread and dark, thick-walled chlamydospores. These chlamydospores act as survival structures, remaining viable in the soil for several years and serving as the primary source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons.

The fungus spreads effectively through infested soil, contaminated agricultural equipment, infected irrigation water, and the movement of infested seedlings or transplants.
