The disease manifests as dark, necrotic lesions on the roots. These black lesions are caused by the accumulation of chlamydospores, which are the resting structures of the fungus. As the root system deteriorates, plants exhibit stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and premature wilting, often leading to total crop loss if conditions are ideal for the pathogen.
The biology of Thielaviopsis basicola is characterized by a sophisticated survival strategy. It produces two distinct types of spores: endoconidia for rapid dissemination during the growing season and thick-walled, dark chlamydospores that allow the fungus to persist in the soil for several years, even in the absence of a susceptible host plant.

It thrives in cool to moderate soil temperatures (typically 15°C to 22°C) and prefers slightly acidic soil conditions.
