Tobacco mosaic virus

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is a highly infectious plant pathogen belonging to the Virgaviridae family and the Tobamovirus genus. It is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus known for its remarkable stability and resilience. This pathogen can persist in soil, water, and dried plant debris for several years, making it a persistent threat to agricultural production.

The virus primarily affects Solanaceous crops, including tobacco, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Infection leads to stunted growth, mosaic patterning on leaves, leaf distortion, and necrosis in both stems and fruits. The resulting physiological stress significantly impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to dramatic yield losses and economic decline for growers.

TMV is transmitted mechanically rather than through insect vectors. The primary modes of dissemination include contaminated agricultural tools, hands of workers handling plants, infected seeds, and even tobacco products handled by field workers. Once inside the host tissue, the virus replicates rapidly, utilizing the host’s cellular machinery to spread systemically throughout the entire plant.

Environmental factors such as high planting density and high humidity create optimal conditions for the spread of TMV. The virus thrives in both field and greenhouse environments, where frequent cultural practices like pruning or harvesting increase the risk of cross-contamination. Its ability to withstand heat and standard chemical cleaners makes it a formidable challenge to manage.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling TMV. These include:
