Description
Early blight, caused by the fungus Alternaria solani, is a major disease affecting tomato crops worldwide. This pathogen belongs to the kingdom Fungi and is known for causing significant damage to solanaceous plants. It is particularly problematic in humid environments where the spores can rapidly spread across the field.
The characteristic symptoms include dark brown to black spots with concentric rings, often described as a target-board pattern, appearing primarily on the lower leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, causing the leaves to turn yellow and eventually die. Infected fruit may develop large, sunken lesions, typically near the stem end, which can lead to fruit drop.
The life cycle of Alternaria solani relies on survival within plant debris, soil, or alternative hosts like potatoes. Conidia produced by the fungus are dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or farm equipment. Once on a host plant, the spores germinate and penetrate the tissue, eventually producing new generations of spores that propagate the disease throughout the season.
Disease development is favored by warm temperatures, typically between +24 and +29 degrees Celsius, and periods of high moisture or leaf wetness. Heavy dews or rain showers provide the necessary moisture for successful infection. Proper cultural practices, such as increasing plant spacing for better airflow and mulching to prevent soil splashing, are essential to minimize risk.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies to reduce inoculum levels and protect the plant tissue. Key measures include
- sanitation by removing and destroying crop residues;
- implementing a 3-year crop rotation;
- applying preventative fungicides during favorable weather conditions;
- maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization.
