Tomato ringspot virus (ToRSV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Nepovirus in the family Secoviridae. It is a polyphagous virus, meaning it can infect a vast range of host plants, including tomatoes, grapes, raspberries, apples, and various ornamental species. Its ability to thrive in diverse climatic conditions makes it a global concern for agriculture.
The disease caused by ToRSV is characterized by distinct symptoms such as chlorotic ring spots, mosaic patterns, leaf curling, and severe stunting. In perennial crops, infection often results in a condition known as "decline," where plants gradually lose vigor, produce lower-quality fruit, and eventually succumb to the viral load, causing significant economic losses for farmers.
The biology of ToRSV is primarily driven by its natural vectors, specifically dagger nematodes of the genus Xiphinema. These microscopic soil organisms acquire the virus by feeding on infected roots and transmit it to healthy roots during subsequent feeding sessions. Additionally, the virus can be disseminated through infected seeds, pollen, and vegetative propagation techniques like grafting.
The spread and survival of the virus are heavily influenced by the presence of its nematode vectors and reservoir hosts. ToRSV survives in the roots of perennial weeds and infected perennial crops, which act as permanent reservoirs in the field. Favorable soil moisture levels ensure the continued activity of nematodes, allowing the virus to persist and spread effectively across an agricultural plot.
Management of ToRSV is difficult once it is established, emphasizing the importance of preventative measures. Key strategies include using virus-indexed propagation material, implementing strict weed control to remove potential reservoirs, and testing soil for the presence of Xiphinema nematodes. Crop rotation and soil fumigation can be employed in high-risk areas to reduce the vector population before establishing new crops.
