Toxic saliva refers to the complex biochemical secretion injected by hemipteran insects into plant tissues during feeding. It is a critical factor in plant pathology, acting as a non-living pathogen that triggers severe systemic or local responses known as phytotoxicosis. The saliva typically contains digestive enzymes such as pectinases and amylases that disrupt plant physiology.
This condition manifests in various crops, including cereals, vegetables, and perennial fruits. Symptoms include chlorosis, leaf curling, necrosis of tissues surrounding the feeding site, and systemic stunting. In extreme cases, the injection of saliva can lead to complete plant wilting or the abortion of developing flowers and fruits, significantly impacting yield.
The biology of this interaction centers on extra-oral digestion. Insects inject saliva to dissolve plant cell components for ingestion. When the saliva contains specific phytotoxic proteins, it interferes with the plant’s ability to conduct photosynthesis and transport water. This physiological imbalance leads to the characteristic symptoms of injury observed by agronomists.
Environmental conditions, particularly high temperatures and drought, exacerbate the spread of these issues. As plants undergo stress, they become more susceptible to insect feeding, and the density of sap-sucking pests tends to increase in such conditions. Rapid population growth of vectors facilitates the widespread distribution of phytotoxicity across fields.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for control. Strategies include monitoring pest populations, implementing cultural practices such as removing weed hosts, and applying selective insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded. Breeding for resistant cultivars remains the most sustainable approach to mitigating the damage caused by insect salivary toxins.
