Description

The causal agent of plum rust is the fungus Tranzschelia pruni-spinosae. It belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, and is a specialized phytopathogen that targets stone fruit trees within the Prunus genus, including plums, apricots, peaches, and almonds.

The disease primarily manifests on leaves. Initial symptoms appear in mid-summer as chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface. Soon after, rusty-brown, powdery pustules (uredinia) develop on the undersides of the leaves. In severe cases, this results in heavy premature defoliation, which severely taxes the tree's resources for the following season.

The life cycle of the pathogen is complex and often heteroecious, meaning it requires two different host species to complete its development. Anemone species frequently serve as the alternate host. The fungus typically overwinters as mycelium in fallen leaves or on infected twigs, producing spores in the spring that initiate primary infection on the stone fruit hosts.

Development and spread are favored by warm, humid weather conditions, particularly high humidity or dew formation, which allows spores to germinate. The fungus spreads rapidly via wind-borne uredospores. Poor orchard management, such as dense canopy growth and lack of air circulation, creates an ideal environment for the pathogen to thrive throughout the summer months.

Control strategies for plum rust focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing and destroying fallen leaf litter significantly reduces the primary inoculum source. Maintaining an open canopy through proper pruning helps reduce humidity around the foliage. Protective and curative fungicide applications, including copper-based products and modern systemic fungicides, are essential for managing outbreaks in high-risk areas.
