Trichodorus christiei

Trichodorus christiei

Description

Taxonomy and pathogen type: Trichodorus christiei (synonym Paratrichodorus minor) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Triplonchida. It is an ectoparasitic, soil-dwelling nematode. Unlike endoparasites, it feeds externally on plant root cells using a unique feeding tube, which results in stunted and distorted root systems, commonly known as stubby root symptoms.

Diseases and crops: This nematode is a broad polyphage, impacting a variety of crops including potatoes, tomatoes, onions, tobacco, and several ornamental species. Its most significant agricultural role is acting as a vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). In potatoes, this leads to corky ringspot disease, which causes internal necrosis, severely impacting marketability and harvest quality.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of T. christiei takes place entirely in the soil. Adults and juveniles are mobile in the soil moisture film and move toward plant roots to feed. Reproduction is sexual, and eggs are laid into the rhizosphere. Under warm, moist conditions, the nematode can complete its generation in just a few weeks, leading to multiple generations per growing season.

Conditions and pathogenicity: The pest thrives in light-textured, sandy, or sandy-loam soils with sufficient moisture. Pathogenicity is two-fold: direct mechanical damage to the root system leading to nutrient deficiency, and the transmission of viral pathogens. The nematode's ability to migrate through the soil allows it to spread viruses across fields efficiently.

Protection and control measures: Controlling T. christiei is challenging due to its widespread distribution in the soil profile. Recommended strategies include:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce nematode density.
  • Applying soil fumigants or nematicides in high-risk areas prior to planting.
  • Maintaining strict weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs.
  • Ensuring the use of certified, clean planting material to prevent field introduction.
